Women's Self Defence - Dragged From Behind

Rear bear hug

The third most common way a female is attacked by a male is with a rear waist grab and the victim carried away. If it is an overarm rear bear hug you grab the groin or inner thigh. Here we show an underarm rear bear hug. You can try stamping on feet, headbutting backwards, going completely relaxed to slip though the arms, flailing wildly, or hitting with your buttocks. But none of these are likely to work against a very large opponent who has effortlessly picked you off the ground, as in the case in the photo.

No matter how large the attacker and how small you are, his hands will be available targets. Drive the knuckles of one hand into the back of his fist; augment with your other hand. Hit hard and rub. Attack the upper half of the back of the attacker's fist. (For a fist in tension, the lower half - closest to the fingers - becomes relatively resilient to this attack.)
Grab one or two fingers as shown. Note you can bypass the step just above if fingers are already available to you (e.g. if the attacker was foolhardy enough to grab you with interlocked fingers.) As soon as you have grabbed the fingers, rotate them through a small circle; the finger lock must be applied immediately.
Keep the lock on as you rotate round, your other hand already prepared for a slap to the back of the head.
