Pictures!

Over the past few years, the society has held many awareness raising events, protests, and general crazy fun stuff. These include an ethical clothing fashion show, a green fair in library square, weekly farmers markets, debates on animal vivisection, constant letter writing, seminars on environmental topics/ campaigns.. the list goes on and on (and on!)

We held a ‘protest party’ on campus to highlight the University’s wanton destruction of the slopes that we love so much- in the name of providing more car parks! As well as being a bloody great day (and consequently getting the ‘best event’ award at the Union Cheers Awards!) it highlighted the University’s lack of communication with the students about development plans that were affecting us all. As a result of the event,  dialogue was opened between students and the management which led to an eventual reduction in the scale of these plans (i.e. they got east slope, we kept the west slope!)

Other activities that occurred last year included our trip to the peak district for a spot of abseiling, fell walking and cider induced craziness! We also attended a climate march in London to protest against the US and Australia’s refusal to join the Kyoto protocol:

As a society we have also worked with the Green Party, ACT, and Friends of The Earth. We have visited the local Earthship and have helped raise money for Care Co-ops, a local organic farm. Basically, if you can think of it, we’ve done it, or are probably up for it!

As you can see, we are a very active society. We are always looking for more people to get involved, so if any first or second years fancy joining in, or starting up a campaign of their own, then please come along to the meetings/ drop us an email. As many of us are third years, it would be a shame if the society disappeared when we left. Getting involved makes your time at uni so much more fun as well!
