Welcome To The University Of Sussex Islamic Society Website
What does the University of Sussex Islamic society have to offer?
Firstly, our wonderful prayer-room / mosque, which is perfectly located near Sussex Union; a quiet haven from the noise and difficulties of student life. Come any time of day or night, and you'll find a peaceful place to pray, read Qur'an, relax, or meet some friendly faces. We also have toilet and wudu facilities, a luxury which many (much bigger!) Islamic societies across the country don't have. For security reasons, you need a code to get into the mosque, if you don't know it already, you can contact us or you can get it from the porter at the union building. We hope you'll find the Islamic society to be open and welcoming; we appreciate diversity amongst our members and don't discriminate on any basis.
Secondly, our regular activities include Jumu'ah prayers every friday, Qur'an circle after Dhuhr every day, and during Ramadan, Iftar and Tarawih. And Finally: whatever you would like to get out of the society! It is your society, and if you would like to arrange trips / speakers/ circles /events you are more than welcome to, and we will provide you with whatever support and help we can inshallah. Come along to a committee meeting (more info to follow) and have your say.
If you have any questions or need any help, please don't hesitate to contact us.
Jazakum Allah khair.

The Hidden Debt To Islamic Civilisation
A lecture by Dr S.E.Al-Djazairi
Tuesday 10th October, Meeting House, 5:15pm
“if there is much misunderstanding in the west about the nature of Islam, there is also much ignorance about the debt our own culture and civilisation owe to the Islamic world. It is a failure, which stems, I think, from the straight-jacket of history, which we had inherited. The medieval Islamic world, from central Asia to the shores of the Atlantic, was a world where scholars and men of learning flourished. But because we have tended to see Islam as the enemy of the West, as a alien culture, society and system of belief, we have tended to ignore or erase its great relevance to our own history” Prince Charles, Oxford University Speech 1993.
The Hidden Debt to Islamic Civilisation is a thorough study of the relevance and how it had been hidden from the Western consciousness, Al-Djazairi puts his many years of expert work as an historian into the book of the same title. From street lighting to soap, from trigonometry to algebra, from windmills to universities, from nutrition to surgery of the eye, from the paper industry to mass literacy, from the banker’s cheque to religious freedom, Western civilisation owes its emergence to its encounter with the Islamic World. Yet few people are aware of this debt. Political efforts at overpowering the Muslim world have lead to small part to play in the decline of the Islamic Civilisation. Recognising and understating this debt is a vital part of bringing about a more just world where Islam can again inspire great achievements to benefit humanity.
The Islamic Society invites you to join us this Tuesday 10th October at the Meeting House (the circular building in the middle of campus) for a thought-provoking lecture by Dr S.E.Al-Djazairi. There will be an opportunity to buy books by the author at the event.

Passing away of Imam Hanif of Medina Mosque, Brighton
Assalamulaikum brothers and sisters. There is some sad news that Imam Hanif of Medina Mosque in Brighton recently passed away whilst visiting his family in India.
When we hear the death of a Muslim we should say:
"INNA LILLAHI WA INNA ILAYHI RAJIUN"
"Be sure we shall test you with something of fear and hunger, some loss in goods or lives or the fruits (of your toil), but give glad tidings to those who patiently persevere, Who say, when afflicted with calamity: "To Allah We belong, and to Him is our return":- They are those on whom (Descend) blessings from Allah, and Mercy, and they are the ones that receive guidance."
Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 155-156 [2,155-156]
Please remember him and his family in your duas.
