Kihon Kata

Kihon Kata, or Takyoku Shodan, can be used to teach effective self defence against a range of commonly occurring attacks. Here we use it to deal with the following acts of aggression:

The moves suggested here do not exhaust the kata's capacity to suggest and code self-defense moves. We have chosen the suggested moves partly because they (amongst others) require minimal accuracy and have built-in redundancy. The moves also illustrate a theme of Kihon Kata: one strategy for dealing with a multitude of attacks is to sweep the attacker down (gedan barai) then bosh him as hard as you can (tsuki)!

In these sequences, the initial aggressor will be called tori, and the defender will be called uke, because of their initial roles in giving and receiving aggression. Here tori is Mike Flanagan and uke is Zoltan Dienes. Some of the applications given use overlapping sequences in the kata.
